Need to remember the prison is ours we just let them stay there. So none of this it's there house or own space. You can't go to a hotel and spark up?

I vaguely remember some movie where tons of missing people were returned to the planet including Glen Miller although he was slightly changed and now played reggae

In some YOI they do get gifts, socks or little stocking filler type things. Staff will usually get a longer dinner there will be a little fewer staff on over the whole day because bang up is usually earlier. You will tend to find its harder to bang up the more difficult cons near the end of your day over the festive period.

We're also doing something different again this year for food. Last year I did a tapas which was amazing. This year with be a 3 bird game pie (pheasant, partridge and duck - all shot locally and prepared by yours truly), roast potatoes and parsnips, carrots and peas with a home made stuffing.

  •     KIRK
I'm here to defend the rules of the forum and its users. I am proud of how helpful, welcoming and supportive this forum is and and I want it to continue to be so.

        FALKOR
I echo KIRK's comments entirely, he put a quote up the other day "It's nice to be important but it's more important to be nice" and to me, that says it all !

        manc-apollo
Boys and girls, this is a forum not a war zone or a jail, and everybody has an opinion good or bad, yours isnt always right!

if you don't like someone elses, tough you dont need to argue it out. I don't care how long you have been in the civil service, the moj or the mod or even stacking shelves in tesco! what i do care about is we are in this job together! we wear the same uniform!

        Karen47
At the end of the day, the RAD day is a measure of 'you' not whoever told you the right thing to say, you wouldn't get a stand in for the fitness test, so you shouldn't seek another's responses or answers to scenarios or questions either.

I worked in an Off Licence as 1 of my very first jobs, it went mental at Christmas, long story but I "resigned" after a wall of whisky, wine and cider fell on me in the stockroom :slex: hehe funny but sad after I was told to pay the damages

Tbh xmas is the 1 time i miss my past life in retail. Love the build up and how busy everywhere is bust most of all just time with family. What about you
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:35 am
I have watched an american program that has a dogs kennel block for rescue dogs and its prisoners that care for the dogs on a day to day basis. Feeding, walking and cleaning them out. I love this idea. I know a few jails up here that keep chickens and its the prisoners that care for them. That and free eggs for bfast
  • falkorSun Dec 10, 2017 9:35 am
True, so I think you're looking forward to "Great Escape" on TV at Christmas, anything else to enjoy?
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:33 am
Think its been proved as there now used in hospital wards as well now. I was sceptical but who can resist a puppy lol
  • falkorSun Dec 10, 2017 9:32 am
    Are they really worth having?
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:32 am
    Its relaxing
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:31 am
Therapy dog is just a laid back dog that comes in that gets stroked and interacts with the prisoners at group or one to one session
  • falkorSun Dec 10, 2017 9:31 am
Hehe a Suit :slwoot: love it
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:30 am
Not sure what it would be down there but could have came in as duty Guv or what is knowing as a suit
  • falkorSun Dec 10, 2017 9:30 am
Oh I get it now, Forces: army navy RAF ok! never heard of a forces officer in jail, or a therapy dog either, revolutionary stuff!!
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:29 am
Not sure how many jails have a forces officer but was created due to an ex forces now prison officer commenting on how many ex soldiers were inside. He liases with forces charities outside and gets helps with finding them accommodation and benefits on release. That and he knows more about things like ptsd and what they have been through
  • falkorSun Dec 10, 2017 9:26 am
At higher level ? what does that mean?
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:26 am
Had the chance to come in at higher level due to previous experience as a manager etc but dont agree with managers that were never a white shirt. Im only 35 so hopefully still got time for that later on
  • falkorSun Dec 10, 2017 9:25 am
Nice one Celtic, you have a rosy future I think, very intriguing post here from you

We have few new roles/aids. My establishment has a forces officer and is proving to be a great help. Also we now have started bringing in therapy dogs. Won't make drastic change yet but step in the proper direction.
so a couple of points there, 1 a Forces Officer? 2. therapy dogs?
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:24 am
I like the shopfloor to much. Higher you go the further you are from the prisoners. Was a gaffer in my last profession and happy to be lower dpwn the pecking order now but do flirt with the idea of throwing my hat in the ring from time to time regarding FLM(our equivalent)
  • falkorSun Dec 10, 2017 9:22 am
Would you ever go for promotion? S.O ?
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:22 am
And there still the back-up of choice. Was part of training scheme few years back delivering a group of police the basics as it looked like we were goin to strike
  • falkorSun Dec 10, 2017 9:21 am
Wow you have a lot of experience and skills for your prison Celtic, you need to go for S.O mate ! :slhehe:
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:20 am
Growing up in Glasgow you kind of picks sides in your childhood with the whole celtic and rangers thing. Its culture here(sad i know) but we also have few lifers in NTE at my establishment that got out of the maze due to the good Friday agreement so spoke to them at length about the troubles. One of my gaffers is also from NI and was in the RUC so during the troubles. Irish history fascinates me
  • falkorSun Dec 10, 2017 9:19 am
1989 the officers went on strike, MET POL were called in, hey presto I was a prison officer
  • falkorSun Dec 10, 2017 9:18 am
I worked in HMP Wandsworth for a few days
  • CelticbhoySun Dec 10, 2017 9:17 am
Yeah had noticed. Its a bit far fetched but anyone not working in a prison would have that vision

You do realise that you would be dealing with more than just dissident republicans and you do get dissident loyalist as well. Not just republicans that are the bad guys.
How do you know so much about the situation over there?

Starred up is another UK prison film (worth a watch) but my favourite is still 'the great escape'. the corner you know it will be on TV soon also love "in the name of the Father" but not a patch on the book.
There are some great stills that I relentlessly nicked from 'Starred up' and used on the site/ forums, here's an example https://www.facebook.com/threestrikesUK/

Situations for staff assaults are going to happen daily and there is no way to avoid this. All you can do is stay vigilant and revert back to training. Unfortunately when you signed up you knew the risks you would face on a daily basis
Celtic what's your favourite move from training that you use?

  •   GOOD NEWS! In February 2017 Prison Officer ORG UK gained an SSL certificate!

  • During February 2017 this site began a journey to HTTPS standards, culminating in our SSL certificate and subsequent page by page audit, to check whether every inch of the site met the sometimes excruciating requirements of today's browsers e.g Firefox, Chrome, Safari etc

HTTPS provides authentication of the website and associated web server with which one is communicating, which protects against man-in-the-middle attacks. Additionally, it provides bidirectional encryption of communications between a client and server, which protects against eavesdropping and tampering with or forging the contents of the communication. In practice, this provides a reasonable guarantee that one is communicating with precisely the website that one intended to communicate with, as well as ensuring that the contents of communications between the user and site cannot be read or forged.
