It is a fact that the Prison Service is the only Civil Service Department where one does not need any formal qualifications to become an employee. In my view it needs to change.

I know from talking to Officers who had many years in the Service back in 88 that recruitment into the job was mainly from ex Armed Service personal..

The powers to be some years ago decided to have certain qualification added to become a Prison Officer when you applied for a post.

That was dropped some years later for whatever reason, why I don't know but I have my thoughts on it.

We now have new Officers joining today that have to pass their NVQ3 within a time frame working in the job which to me makes a lot more sense than getting a hat full of qualification and not having the interpersonal skills to work within the 4 walls of a establishment.

Yes I am ex Service but have found over the years that the best officers are those who have common sense and can stand their ground when the going gets tough be it from the ex Armed Service's or someone who has worked in a supermarket since leaving school.
