Big difference as in better now?

It would be good to know experiences of new recruits on here, or would that just scare potential new recruits off?!

This waiting around during vetting is very frustrating, I can't imagine what the guys who have been waiting for ages are coping with it!

Big difference as in the starting pay now is better but new recruits now cant earn the same money as old terms contracts! New recruits pay max's out at around 24k for a 39hr contract. Old terms max out at 29-30k for 39 hr contract!

But with the 1% pay cap to be abolished, should make things better. And technically speaking, aren't MP's civil servants too?

Old terms are exactly that Old! Everyone who is joining the service now knows the salary and terms beforehand. Being content is something that is missing from the World.

Hi all I'm currently on the merit list waiting for vetting sooner rather than later I hope 😬 After reading all these comments this career change is seeming more daunting than ever. All my jobs have been based around helping and supporting people, it's something I've really enjoyed doing. Pay scale have varied but never been an issue until my most recent job, I left for more money and ended up hating it. Moral of the story I would much rather be in a job I enjoy and can maybe make a difference in people's lives than earn loads of money and be a misrible cow 😂

Hi, I've been excited about joining (passed RAD but waiting to do fitness and medical because nurse was ill on the day) but reading the comments have took the edge off it. Salary I knew about so that's fine. I also understand that it is a very dangerous place to work in and until I am in that situation I don't know how I will deal with it. I am a 5ft 3 under 8st(!) female. Do any prison officers have any advice for me please?

Not current but my theory is that your mouth will be your biggest tool.
Sure it may get rough from time to time but you will have the back up of your fellow officers (well I hope so anyway!)

I know exactly how you feel but just remember if you didn't think you could do it you wouldn't have applied. You may start and not cope or not like it but there is no way to find out until your in. The fact that your on here asking this question and not withdrawing your application says a lot. I just think not everybody in the service will like the job and its like most things those that don't like things shout the loudest. I am in no way saying the job will be easy or saying I myself will be happy or cope in the job. Just merely trying to add my perspective.
25/6 Applied
26/6 POST passed
18/7 RAD
19/7 RAD passed
22/7 merit listed
24/7 conditional offer
25/7 vetting started
22/9 THE CALL
13/11 Induction week
20/11 POELT Start

Some good home truths about what we are walking into.

Although i hope age isn't looked down upon. I'm 26, have 8 years in the army behind me inculding a tour of Iraq and Afghanistan bit i'm am still very nervous about it all. Nothing can prepare you for this i don't think. As always team work is key.

How many ex forces are working in prisons if anyone knows? Does it seem to be quite natual moving from 1 uinform to another?

Looking forward to starting at the end of the month.
