Hi Wikster73. Were you on a merit list for there, or straight in? If so how long did you wait?

I'm on list for there and a couple of other NW prisons at the minute, seems to be taking forever!! :(
Hi Jaypee33 - I passed my RAD , then received a conditional offer pretty much straight away. Been on vetting now for 5 weeks
I probably just missed the boat then! I asked for my RAD to be mirrored on 29/09 and it happened on 31/10. I was on another forum asking about RAD scores, think that is what they use to pick from merit list, so hoping mine are good enough!
RAD 22nd Sept
Result & OH Assist email 25 Sep
Merit list (1) 26 Sep
POST for 2 other establishments 27 Sep
Merit List (2) 31 Oct
Merit List (3) 6 Nov

I only applied for the 1 prison rather than a few so I guess that was why my offer was quicker . Good Luck

Does anyone know if you are allowed to do Overtime / PP soon as you start at your establishment or would you need to complete a probation period first ?

Do you think the amount of new staff will not drastically reduce the amount?
I mean obviously the amount of staff doing PP will increase, however to save money they will be able to use the staff to do the bedwatches ect as part of their contracted hours and not have to pay the ‘premium rate’.
I know the amount of PP at my jail hasn’t been affected yet but I’m expecting over there next couple of months for it to reduce.

Pp will increase not decrease.
There are still more officers leaving than are starting and of those new starters around 50% leave within 1st 18 months.

Qe have around 40 new starters in past 6 months gone live.
14 have left already
Lost 12 experienced officers due to retirement, long term sick, left job.

Given shortfalls on staffing levels each week.
Thursday pm shift 18 officers short is the biggest.

I read somewhere (can't remember where) that only around 20% of new prison officers are still in role after 12 Months? Serving officers....is this a realistic number in your view?

That's a pretty high turnover then, thankfully I've always worked in shall I say 'challenging' environments & I have no dependants, so not fussy about shift patterns, hopefully that'll Help!

What in your opinion causes this Turnover?

What causes lack of retention...
Stressful job, lack of completely no holds barred un edited information about the job.

We get told off for it from time to time but id rather someoe knows that when you open a cell door you dont know what's going to happen from the other side or patrolling the landing someone might want to blind side you.

Or you have to split a fight up because its spaghetti on toast for lunch not beans on toast...
Yes I've had to do this!!!

Or stop someone from swallowing a razor blade...
Or strip (full) search them because they have stuff inserted in there bum.

I do miss NTKB's input..
Good Job I talk to him in work emails

I think most people would want honest facts, not fluffy watered down nonsense. Without the full facts you cannot make an informed decision on wether this is the right career path for you. I've read some of the 'warts & all' posts & I've also read the daft ramblings of people complaining that you'll put people off the job. My view on that is, that's a good thing, because if something in writing scares the pants off them, then the real deal will f**k them right up Basically!
