Struggling with finances in hmp London jail. compassionate transfer

Post by robdenio » Mon Oct 23, 2017 2:28 pm

Hello Fellow officers,

So i have been in the prison service for 18 months, and i love my job (i really do)

I relocated to London from the north, I've had a really good 18 months. I get on well with all my colleagues and have even just been accepted onto the advanced c&r team. But to be totally honest i'm struggling financially down south i mean my rent is £1250 per month my council tax is £200 per month not to mention all my other expenses like petrol, insurance etc. So I've been getting by, doing pp and overtime here and there.

I moved down here with my wife and three children and there happy but the stress of finances are hurting us, I mean i'm already having sleepless nights about Christmas.

Me and my wife decided it was time we moved back up north as we are not in the best of positions and there only going to get worse. So i applied for a couple of prisons in the north where i'm originally from and been approved for the rad day. I called shared services and told them i am a serving officer do i still need to complete another rad, and i was told.

"We cant help you" - "You need to speak to the business hub and ask them as they may refuse you applying for other jobs" :slhmm:

So my question is.. Does this mean i cannot apply for other hmp jobs while in the service? I really didn't want to go through the compassionate transfer route as we are already short staffed and the colleagues i have spoke to said they have been refused transfers before. Has any one else been in this situation and what did you do.

The South east is an expensive place to live. Compassionate transfer maybe your only option

I'm not really in a position to be too picky. I would have liked Manchester but my governor said she had contacts at hmp risley so i'm happy to go there if there are no other options.

Hi,

Do you mind me asking how much roughly do you earn after tax and let's say 41 hours a week ? I am just in vetting for London Prison and I am in very similar situation with my finances I wonder if it will be enough...

Well this may seem strange but i'm only on 37 hours per week. I have applied several times to get the 4 hour top up to 41 hours but they never got back to me typical prison service.

My take home is around 1750 per month.

Apply for transfer to hmp Berwyn
They were offering PIT moves for experienced officers not sure if they still are but worth a try
"I know what I must do. I don't know if I'm strong enough to do it. Will you help me?"
