five years ago Benchmarking came in which said prisons could run with a lot less staff, VEDS was born and thousands of highly experienced prison officers were paid off handsomely to leave early.
This gave HMP the prisons with a lot less staff that they wanted and since then? Well since then we have RECORD NUMBERS of brand new prison officers with 0 experience whatever. Far better than the hugely experienced prison officers who were paid handsomely to leave.

has anyone appealed against failed vetting and been succesful

Post by Boopster40 » Fri Nov 03, 2017 10:38 am

Hi All,
I have just had my status changed to say I havent passed my vetting. Ive been waiting for 4 months and im devastated. Has anyone any advice on the appeals process and what are the chances of the decision being overturned ? I have no criminal record and already have an enhanced DBS.

Did they tell you why you failed?

Yes you can appeal.
But it can come down to the smallest of things.
Are you.on the electoral role
Have u ever been arrested
Have you ever been investigated by the police
Do you have unsatisfied ccj
Have you been done for speeding
All the above did you declare them even if over 7 years ago ( hmpps jobs are exempt from the rehabilitation of offenders act 1974)

Enhanced DBS will always be re done, but you also have a PNC check.

It can also be a referees did not get back to them.

It could be you have gaps in your employment not explained.

Or a multitude of other things

So if references are not returned then do you not get contacted before you fail to see if there are altetnative details?

if so mine will surely fail as i gave the last head office address that i knew of, for a previous employeer which im sure has since moved.

PNC is stage 2 of any DBS check, these aren't separate entities.

Yes there are occasions where people have failed due to no contact from references, it seems its easier for some of them to just send the detail they have to the decisions team rather than ask you to provide details of a referee.

mccudden, they havent told me why. I logged on to steria this morning and my status had changed to say that i had failed the vetting checks. I dont know wether to ring S.S and ask them. I explained to them that one of my referees may try and sabotage my chances as we had a clash of personalities and she has done this before but they told me they were not interested in anything she said, they just wanted confirmation of dates of employment.
I am absolutely gutted, I really want this job.

Im not sure if Im on the electoral role but think i may have put my details on their online system. I have no cautions, I have no ccj's, i did attend a speed awareness course about 3 years ago though.

Did you declare that you attended a speed awareness?

Also what cat of prison did you apply for?
It may be CTC failed if cat A.

That shouldn't be an issue i would call sscl see if they can tell u anything. They will more than likely give u an email address to write to for explanation if it is a reference problem then u should be able to sort it with them

Edit as Sgt Bush said so long as u declared the speeding course

Also a PNC check is separate to a DBS or enhanced.
According to the law an enhanced DBS or DBS are bound by the rehabilitation of offenders act and anyone can pay to get one.
A police national computer check not only convictions but arrests and investigations and incidents that didn't result in charges and also charges that resulted in found not guilty etc.

DBS are convictions for the passed 7 years (longer in certain situations)

I honestly don't know where you got that information from but there are 5 steps to a DBS and step 2 is the PNC.

Stage 1 – Application Form received by the DBS and validated
Stage 2 – Police National Computer searched
Stage 3 – DBS Children, DBS Adults and List 99 searched (where applicable)
Stage 4 – With the Local Police Force
Stage 5 – Certificate printed

Right ok you seem to know best so ill leave it at that....... I'm not arguing on how I know.
We can all cut copy paste from page 1 of a google search.
Pnc for dbs is for CONVICTIONS IN PAST 7 YEARS.
They, the dbs, are bound by ROOA 1974.
Prison officers are exempt from this act.
The pnc check for prison officers also includes investigation's and arrests which the DBS have no right to publish.

If PNC isnt part of the DBS why is it written on the DBS certificate? Why would they even mention it if it is separate?

I currently have an enhanced DBS for my role in the Army and for one as a Door Supervisor and both have PNC parts to them.
