The solution to more staff is very simple: more pay.

Do you know how much a bricklayer earns anually? £40,000. Why? because there is a very, very serious shortage in that particular skill. Same for plumbers and electricians and engineers.

Hike up the salary, and the applications are guaranteed to be flowing in.

I am due to start in around 5 weeks. Do the serving officers feel the current influx of new starters may help the situation? I know it wont fix the problems but mearly paste over the cracks for now. I am hopefully the service can be repaired with enough time and effort though.

Erm in terms of new staff sure it will help... but as you said it’s papering over cracks VEDS wiped out years of experienced officers and now leave entire wings to be ran by staff with less than 2 years between them.

I think the main issue for retention is wages just look at the difference between a new Start HMP wages compared to that off a policeman or my own service the fire service.

It’s an easy way to provide someone with the experience to get into another uniformed job quite easily
