five years ago Benchmarking came in which said prisons could run with a lot less staff, VEDS was born and thousands of highly experienced prison officers were paid off handsomely to leave early.
This gave HMP the prisons with a lot less staff that they wanted and since then? Well since then we have RECORD NUMBERS of brand new prison officers with 0 experience whatever. Far better than the hugely experienced prison officers who were paid handsomely to leave.

I see the numbers but what do you mean? It's good or bad?

There's significantly less staff on the wings, I think this is clearly bad news for the service.

Prison Officer (Band 3) numbers went from 19,325 in 2012 to 14,986 in 2016.

Ok. I wasnt sure if you meant that there is light at the end of the tunnel as numbers are very slowly starting increase. It would be interesting to see what the live number is today after this year's recruitment.

It would be interesting.

To get Prison Officer (band 3) numbers back to 2012 levels it would require an increase of 4,339. The recruitment drive would also have to account for natural reduction (through retirements, resignations, etc.). Even then the loss of experienced staff cannot be replaced.

Doesn’t matter how many are being recruited if they’re haemorrhaging experienced staff because the service isn’t doing enough to retain them.
If you don’t have experienced staff, who’s going to help guide the new staff on the landings? It’ll be the blind leading the blind :slno:

The 'blind leading the blind' scenario will have a massive impact on the amount of new starters walking out and not coming back, literally days and weeks in to the job.

People will always slate things fact of the matter is as a net figure the prison service is up on previous years recruitment wise yes it won't go back to 2012 levels but my establishment has nearly doubled officer near enough ... also experienced staff are leaving as the pay increases aren't as good as they were and also the perks aren't as great for example not having a few hour lunchbreaks the prisoners attitudes have changed the lucky thing with us is we are joining at a point when the service has and still is struggling so things can o my get better .

Also the experience differs by jail by jail. My jail was on its arse but now is now fully staffed and we now have a functioning regime. The atmosphere in the prison is softening slowly but surely. However change does take time to fully bed in, "Rome wasnt built in a day"
