five years ago Benchmarking came in which said prisons could run with a lot less staff, VEDS was born and thousands of highly experienced prison officers were paid off handsomely to leave early.
This gave HMP the prisons with a lot less staff that they wanted and since then? Well since then we have RECORD NUMBERS of brand new prison officers with 0 experience whatever. Far better than the hugely experienced prison officers who were paid handsomely to leave.

Hi there guys,

So i passed my online tests in august, i have my scheduled familiarisation coming up on the 10th of Nov.

I was hoping someone could fill me in on what exactly would be going on on the day, i saw Elkins17 asked for advise on what to wear to which npatchett2000 replied it is formal and to treat it as such, but i also saw somewhere that there may be some strength assessments and something on the physical side, this leads me to beleive that i should wear something more appropriate I.e- sweatpants/shorts+trainers or am i wrong?

A familiarisation visit is literally just an opportunity to visit your chosen establishment (most do it before RAD, but it seems some only do it afterwards)

You will be shown around the prison, the wings and landings etc, and you might even get to meet a few prisoners. During that time the rest of the process and RAD will also be explained to you. It is also an opportunity for you to ask probing questions about the role and the establishment. On my visit we also did do a mock 'building search' to find some hidden contraband, after which the dogs were brought in to find what we missed.

But, to my knowledge, there are no physical tests done during any visit, as these are all done at your RAD - so wear formal clothing, ie , a suit, or jacket and tie etc, and obviously show yourself off in your best light as you (hopefully) would in any interview situation.

(Some on my visit didnt actually seem that bothered to be there or not, slouching around, hands in pockets, YAWNING, etc etc... frankly, I dont know why they bothered to show up - but hey, who am I to judge).

I’m definitely treating it like an interview for both my familiarisation visit and the non physical parts of my RAD. start as you mean to go on. Chances are you’ll meet the gov and I’d rather look the part. My familiarisation is on the 24th at Feltham! Excited is an understatement!
