five years ago Benchmarking came in which said prisons could run with a lot less staff, VEDS was born and thousands of highly experienced prison officers were paid off handsomely to leave early.
This gave HMP the prisons with a lot less staff that they wanted and since then? Well since then we have RECORD NUMBERS of brand new prison officers with 0 experience whatever. Far better than the hugely experienced prison officers who were paid handsomely to leave.

Vetting and references

Post by Tiredofwaiting » Mon Dec 11, 2017 4:48 pm

Hi I know vetting is discussed all the time; I'm just wondering about references, I'm sure when I attended the familiarisation day for my chosen establishment the recruitment advisor said they no longer apply for employment references but use HMRC to obtain start and end dates of employment instead as it is a faster process. Has anyone else heard this or does anyone know if this is the case? Or should I be contacting my previous employers to see if they have been contacted?

Also who do they use from your employment history if they do still do it in this way? Is it all previous employers or most recent two or?

I believe they check the last 5 years of your work history, so it would depend on how many employers you’ve had in that time.

Hi,
The recruitment advisor at the establishment I'm going for has said they don't use references anymore the contact hmrc to check employment now? I'm just confused as everyone else is discussing employment references and countersignatory

They do check with HMRC but if there are discrepancies with the dates (as there often is) they then check with supplied refs.

Usually, if vetting starts after September 2017 then HMRC is used. But this is not always the case. My advisor also said this to me too but sometimes they still contact the employers for references. Unfortunately there is no set way. How long have you been in vetting for?
14/10/2017- Applied
16/10/2017- Passed POST

There is no set time, or how they do things! My manager never mentioned mine to me, and I didn’t feel the need too as I wasn’t asked!! I kept this quite the whole time through vetting didn’t tell anyone at work, it was a shock to them when I took in my notice. She actually thought I’d had second thoughts. She was requested a reference on the 3rd August. My vetting/conditional offer only came
Through on the 1st August. I was very surprised! She couldn’t believe how long it took. My counter signature never heard a thing.
22nd April - RAD
28th April - RAD results passed/OH Assist Returned
12th May - Merit Listed
1st August - Conditional Offer/Submitted Vetting

24th November - Got the call :slyay:
8th January - Start Date

Well that’s quite worrying :? I’ve been working in Iraq for the last 5/6 years, tax free, due to days in country ( no tax paid if you’re in the U.K. for less than 90 days a year)

I hope these checks don’t end in a big tax bill!

If you weren’t liable for tax then, you won’t be liable for tax now.

Your biggest problem will be providing suitable references for them to check your work history, and what you were doing for those 5 years.
