Can anyone get a tour of a prison?

Post by Ak11 » Sat Oct 14, 2017 6:12 pm

So my Mrs has always wanted to see within a prison and since I am working at one would like to see where I work. I don't think she is able to, but thought I'd ask anyway. Probably a stupid question

Yeah anyone can get a tour....just commit a crime serious enough to land you in one.

Seriously though, even to get on a Familiarisation visit you should have been security cleared to ensure that it is safe to have you in a prison.

RAD result - 14 July
Conditional offer - 17 July
Vetting - 18 July

I personally think this is a very interesting question and issue to raise. As for the familiarisation day, they started slightly after I applied, but isn't those done before the RAD or certainly before vetting completes and you start POELT training?. In any case, as a publicly funded service I feel for as long as any such person interested in such a tour meets a minimal security screening be it at a nominal cost to themselves, then it might be something that the service could do a number of times a year.

Not all fam visits are done prior to Vetting, mine was but that was a military recruitment day we went too and having done that, I personally don’t think that it is a good idea to have members of the public in as we can’t screen these people quick enough nor are there enough staff to carry out searches on them so there is the possibility of smuggling contraband in via this route also.

I had mine before RAD, they done basic security checks for the CAT A establishment I was touring.

We was told by a CM that they hold events at the prison so family and friends of prison officers can attend to see what it's like.

Did you complete the POST before your fam visit? If so you were invited to the Visit as a result of this, you’d be amazed at what info can be found by simply looking up the data you used to complete that.

We have one day every year where we can apply for some friends and family to have a tour of the prison. Never been any issues that I’m aware of. This may not be something that’s available to staff in every jail though.

Thanks for all the replies. I may just need to ask my establishment and see if they offer a family and friends day. Cheers

See your number 1
I had, and the other new officers were allowed a visit.
Its to bridge gaps between hmpps and your family by letting them see were you work and how its run. Its to put minds at rest fir your partner etc.

We had coffee n cake in the boardroom with the number 1 and then a short tour.
I'm sure its a local thing but my partner found it reassuring
Zulu's at dawn is for prison officers only. Pm me for verification process
